AWS Cloud Practitioner Exam Preparation
1. A quick note on distractors
Section titled “1. A quick note on distractors”There are many services you will find in questions that are distractors. There are over 200 AWS services and a course cannot cover them all — Quicksight, Cognito, AppStream, Server Migration Service and so on turn up as plausible-looking wrong answers.
The practical advice from the deck:
- The course covers all the services that research and experience show people actually get questions about.
- If you see a service not covered here but present in someone else’s practice exam, don’t panic — it was most likely left out intentionally.
- If you see a service that is the answer at the exam but was not covered, that is worth reporting back.
2. State of learning checkpoint
Section titled “2. State of learning checkpoint”Before booking, look at how far you have come on the learning journey against the official exam page: https://aws.amazon.com/certification/certified-cloud-practitioner/.
3. Practice makes perfect
Section titled “3. Practice makes perfect”- If you’re new to AWS, get a bit of hands-on practice before rushing to the exam.
- The exam recommends you have 6 months or more of hands-on experience on AWS.
- Practice makes perfect.
- If you feel overwhelmed by the amount of knowledge you just learned, just go through it one more time.
4. Exam content — the two question types
Section titled “4. Exam content — the two question types”There are two types of questions:
| Type | Shape |
|---|---|
| Multiple choice | Has one correct answer and three incorrect responses |
| Multiple response | Has two or more correct responses out of five or more options |
Careful with multiple response: the exam software does not tell you whether you selected the right number of answers — but the required number is mentioned in the question (for example, “SELECT TWO”).
Three more mechanics:
- Always try to answer the question — unanswered questions are considered incorrect.
- There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so guess.
- If you need to review a question later (once you’re done answering all of them), you can flag it.
5. Proceed by elimination
Section titled “5. Proceed by elimination”- Most questions are going to be high-level “pick-a-service” questions.
- For all questions, rule out answers that you know for sure are wrong.
- For the remaining answers, understand which one makes the most sense.
- There are very few trick questions — don’t over-think it.
- If a solution seems feasible but highly complicated, it’s probably wrong.
6. Read each service’s Overview
Section titled “6. Read each service’s Overview”- Example: https://aws.amazon.com/s3/.
- Overviews cover a lot of the questions asked at the exam.
- They help confirm your understanding of a service.
7. Get into the AWS community
Section titled “7. Get into the AWS community”- Help and discuss with other people in the course Q&A.
- Review questions asked by other people in the Q&A.
- Do the practice test in this section.
- Do extra practice exams.
- Read forums online and read online blogs.
- Attend local meetups and discuss with other AWS engineers.
- Watch re:Invent videos on YouTube (the AWS conference).

9. Your AWS certification journey
Section titled “9. Your AWS certification journey”AWS certifications come in four levels:
| Level | What it is | Experience recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Foundational | Knowledge-based certification for a foundational understanding of AWS Cloud | No prior experience needed |
| Associate | Role-based certifications that showcase your knowledge and skills on AWS and build your credibility as an AWS Cloud professional | Prior cloud and/or strong on-premises IT experience recommended |
| Professional | Role-based certifications that validate advanced skills — designing secure, optimized and modernized applications and automating processes on AWS | 2 years of prior AWS Cloud experience recommended |
| Specialty | Dive deeper and position yourself as a trusted advisor to your stakeholders and/or customers in strategic areas | Refer to the exam guides on the exam pages |
The Cloud Practitioner certification you are preparing for is the Foundational one.
10. Certification paths by role
Section titled “10. Certification paths by role”The deck maps certifications onto job roles. Each role has a recommended path, and each notes whether a certification is optional for IT/cloud professionals or recommended for those working with AI/ML; the full chart is published by AWS at https://d1.awsstatic.com/training-and-certification/docs/AWS_certification_paths.pdf.
Architecture
Section titled “Architecture”- Solutions Architect — design, develop and manage cloud infrastructure and assets, work with DevOps to migrate applications to the cloud.
- Application Architect — design significant aspects of application architecture including user interface, middleware and infrastructure, and ensure enterprise-wide scalable, reliable and manageable systems.
Operations
Section titled “Operations”- Systems Administrator — install, upgrade and maintain computer components and software, and integrate automation processes.
- Cloud Engineer — implement and operate an organization’s networked computing infrastructure, and implement security systems to maintain data safety.

11. Congratulations
Section titled “11. Congratulations”That is the end of the course. Beyond the exam itself, the closing advice is simple: if you feel you learned how to use AWS, share what worked — post your tips so they help and motivate other students — and go be a genuinely good AWS Cloud Practitioner.
